The Fish

BY WILLIAM BUTLER YEATS

Although you hide in the ebb and flow
Of the pale tide when the moon has set,
The people of coming days will know
About the casting out of my net,
And how you have leaped times out of mind
Over the little silver cords,
And think that you were hard and unkind,
And blame you with many bitter words.

Rooney, Kathleen. "The Fish." Poetry Foundation. Poetry Foundation, n.d. Web. 09 Oct. 2014.

The rhyme scheme of this poem is ABAB CDCD. Most rhymes are perfect rhymes except for cords and words which is a sight rhyme. This rhyme scheme is an example of alternate rhyme. The poem is about a tough break up of relationship the author had with a friend or a significant other. This experience is described through the point of view of someone trying to catch a fish. The perfect rhymes make you think it could be a simple poem about a fishing trip. However word choice like "bitter words" and "hard and unkind" make us believe he talking directly to someone. We can see this is a sorrowful story from the author and he uses "you" in order to try and put all the blame on the other person in the relationship. He blames them for allowing "the casting of my net" and now they have "leaped times out of mind". The use of sight rhyme at the end really shifts the tone because this is were the author really shows his hatred for the person through use of "bitter words".
